Audio Commenting Using Adobe Acrobat
Presenter: Stacy Tibbetts
Description: This session will demonstrate the use of Adobe Acrobat 7.0's recorded audio feedback tool in responding to student writing. This technique can provide a greater sense of instructor "presence" in an online class, and may help to alleviate high paper-grading workload.
The session will demonstrate the technique, discuss its pros and cons (technical and rhetorical), compare it to other audio recording tools like MSWord's, and introduce a recent ethnographic study by Philip Ice at WVU, which found the technique to be very popular among students.
See "Using Asynchronous Auditory Feedback..." link at this site: http://www.sloan-c.org/conference/proceedings/2006/index.asp#session1
Anecdotal feedback from current PSU online courses may also be shared.
Prerequisite Skills: Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat is recommended (but not necessary).
Interest in responding to student writing in the online environment would be helpful.
