Mainframes for the Web: From Heavy Metal to Hip Hop

Presenters: Matt Gourley, Phil Hawkins

Description: Still working on a catchy name for the presentation but here is the abstract:

Stereotypical thinking has placed any serious thoughts of wide spread use of mainframe technology for web based platforms way off the technology radar screens for most organizations.  Instead, the buzz on the streets is that survival in today's 'weberized' world requires modernizing your environment and mainframes typically do not get mentioned in the same conversations as modernization.

Not so, in Administrative Information Services which is a unit of ITS at Penn State. AIS is a traditionally mainframe-centric organization with institutional data residing on the ìbig ironî of the mainframe. Their direction in the ìSystems Development Modernizationî effort is to leverage the stability, high availability, solid security, and skilled mainframe technology personnel to build the next generation of infrastructure for providing web based services. This path to modernization builds upon the existing foundation of administrative computing rather than trying the standard ìrip and replaceî approach that has caused so many peer institutions both large amounts of cash and grief.

Come hear about the pain, progress and possibilities of this new, more modernized environment.

Prerequisite Skills: General knowlege of or interest in information systems development at Penn State.
